Intermittent & Continuous

Rita looks up at a staircase in Hope Cement Works

R is a First Level Inspector at Hope Cement Works and Quarry. Here, she fulfils her childhood dream of working on a quarry site, as her father did. The meaning of sound snuck up on R. Until working here, she hadn’t heard a quarry blast since she was eight years old, when her father left the family for another. Decades later, hearing the sound of the quarry’s blast provokes a visceral physiological reaction; summoning an unresolved sadness, and the irretrievable magic of her youth.

Intermittent & Continuous presents a dialogue between the past and present, the human and non-human, considering how our situational soundscapes come to acquire social and emotional meaning over time.
